Considering Abortion

Medical Abortion

Also known as RU486, Mifepristone or Abortion Pill – Within 4 – 10 weeks after last menstrual period.

  • First pill is taken by mouth
  • A second pill is taken 24 to 48 hours later to cause pregnancy to be passed from your uterus, which can take 24 – 48 hours.
  • A follow up ultrasound will be required to determine if the procedure has been completed.
  • Side effects can include heavy bleeding, fever, headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and cramping.

Surgical Abortion

Suction Curettage: between 6 to 14 weeks after last menstrual period.

  • After widening of the cervix with rods a plastic tube is inserted into the uterus to remove the contents via suction.
  • A loop-shaped knife called a curette may be used to remove any remaining contents.
  • Due to the manual opening of the cervix a general anesthetic is typically given.
  • Side effects include cramping, pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and possible risk of infection.
